Channel 4 Mash up!
I’ve realised how rubbish I’ve been at updating my blog so am going to start popping some things I’ve been doing over the last few months.
First up is a very VERY quick turnaround cheap and cheerful thing for Channel 4 last Christmas (2011)
Phone call on Monday evening while my wife was ill.
Delivery of film on Thursday afternoon.
Five days before Christmas.
If this is the typical turn around for Channel 4 I will never look at one of their promos and think “Well, they could have put a bit more effort into that one.”
One of the nice things was being able to play around with Cathy Newman (purely in a Photoshop/After Effects way), who was at school with me, and try and get her as center stage as possible hence why she’s in front of Jon Snow at the start. The red dress helps although with the flying cattle/pig shot at the end I had to have Jon Snow up front, but i did give her a cup of tea if that helps. Go Cathy!!
Many thanks to Luke Carpenter for cutting and prepping a lot of the characters and to Lewis and Carmen and Luke (and Tracey and momentarily Nathalie) for sourcing stuff and producing things.
Blimey Riley!
Well at least the family got presents that year.
Abundance Generation
Bruce, Karl and Lou from Abundance have asked me to play around with their company branding which is turning out to be an extremely fun thing.
Aided and abetted by Pat, who’s doing pretty much all the leg work of coding and designing the proper grown up side of the site (UI, coding, graphics and generally reminding my that my spelling and typography is pretty rubbish), we’re getting together an entire world of stuff.
At the moment it’s pretty much a holding page and a film but there’s some rather fun things in the pipeline.
Here’s the site…
Here’s the film…
Wow. How brilliant!
Lisa Marie Hall is/was the production designer on the Holy Flying Circus film I’ve just been posting about and has begun to post her production diary entries OF A TOTALLY UNRELATED FILM but which has useful similarities with her work on the Holy Flying Circus film.

Lisa’s site is here too.

Finally we have been given a release date for Owen Harris (director) and Tony Roche’s (writer) Comedy Docu-drama on the Pythons, “Holy Flying Circus” for which I made the title sequence and some animation sequences for.
It’s very funny and a tiny bit irreverant and well worth the watch.
Once it’s been outed I shall post something a little bit more informative about the title sequence at least!!!
I’ve realised that my Phonotrope page is getting rather unwieldly so I have started a separate blog to cover all Phonotropic aspects I come across on the web.
Note, the image below is for something I’ve yet to properly post onto the web but it’s COMING (all very exciting)!!!

go get an iPad!
While I wait to be able to show you some rather impressive Phonotrope things I’ve recently been doing I’ve just spent the last few minutes laughing out loud at what alexandre-dubosc.com has done. It’s superb.
It may be just a cup to you but it’s our daughter’s first word.
Which makes it truly awesome.
N.B I PREVIOUSLY SAID IT WAS THE 11TH, SORRY, THAT’S ME BEING A MORON.
THANKS TO ANNA FOR SPOTTING THIS
For those of you based out in LA and find themselves kicking their heels on Saturday the 14th of May you could do worse than pop down to the Geffen Contemporary part of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (it’s a bit of a stroll from the main building) for 13:00 where I’ll be doing a talk/workshop on my Phonotropes as part of the Art in the Streets exhibition.
I’m not entirely sure how the day is going to pan out but it should involve some free guides printed up for you to take part and I’ll be taking you through some of my experiments and the processes behind them. Should be really good and by all accounts the exhibition itself is pretty awesome, blog here.
Many thanks to Jonathan Wells, Anna Simonse and Cindy Thoennessen for organising the talk and for flying me out there too. I’m under a lot of pressure not to let them down.
I’ve just been sent a snippet from a graduation student from the ECA, Ania Hazel Leszczynska, which looks really rather incredible. Stop frame/illustrated/2D/3D.
Really can’t wait to see the whole thing.
Her site’s worth a trawl through too with a great little music promo she did the animation for (really lovely song too) and also an intriguing project seemingly called ‘The Train Film’ although that’s not the title.
Looka.tv is a very good site for some eclectic films which I’ve just had some stuff posted there. Well worth the visit.
Ok, so I don’t have the monopoly on ‘Aaaaaaah’ related titles but this is absolutely awesome.
Very much a film of our times (cultural refs etc…) but exceedlingly well observed and explored. Well done Lee and team
I simply cannot say how incredible this film is. In terms of using loops and the Zoetrope/Phonotrope/however he managed to create this genius film it’s stunning.
I want to put something churlish up like “I might as well give up now” but the great thing about the Zoetrope/Phonotrope process is that you take it in so many ways this is just an inspiration as opposed to depressing seeing someone really break the technique into the world.
Eric Dyer’s site.
EDIT – Oh my crikey, he’s done exactly what I wanted to do for an exhibition but done it very very well and extraordarily beautifully!! Now I really do want to give up!
