Mike Paterson and my first (and so far only) submission into the Straight 8 competition, 2005.

Straight 8 is a competition where you can only shoot your film on one cartridge of super 8 ‘blind’ (i.e. not being able to develop it). It is then sent to the organisers who develop it then judge it and the first time you see it is on the screening night (assuming it gets through).

Blooming great fun and it got taken out to Cannes as part of the final eleven films however it was dis-allowed into the official final ten films as EMI never gave us permission to use the 3 seconds of music that Mike re-mixed for it (Mike emailed and emailed and phoned over two months but they never got back to us and Ed and Ben said they couldn’t touch it because of the lack of rights).

Cast

Neil Edmond – Cary Grant
Jerry Le Fevre (and Mike Paterson at the end) – Crop Duster
Jim Le Fevre – Land Based Motor Vehicles (and also corn field)

With help from Daniella Denis-Betts (can’t quite remember Daniella’s surname but will ammend as soon as I find out)

Mike also did the music and sound which I think is superb.

I shall try and post up the ‘comparison’ version with the original section from North by Northwest beside it and then you’ll see exactly how amazing Neil is.

Aha, here it is…

…so if you want to see how incredibly good Neil is (and of course Mike and everyone else) then hopefully this will stay up for long enough

… our film, on the left, has been pretty much untouched however the original North by Northwest film on the right has been ever-so slightly spliced to match our film but you will have to take my word for it that the maximum amount of frames that we were out was I think 12 for a couple of the shots but incredibly most of them were only one or two frames out.

Equally I seem to remember that we did change one shot from the original (in the maize/corn bit) and that has been correspondingly adjusted in this comparison film.
